Gum Grafting — stopping recession and protecting your teeth for the long term

Gum recession exposes roots, increases sensitivity, and weakens teeth. Dr. Butel treats the cause and restores gums through minimally invasive techniques.

Gum recession occurs when the gum retracts downward, exposing the root surface of the tooth. It can affect one or more teeth and often progresses silently, without pain in the early stages. Among the most common causes: overly vigorous brushing, bruxism (teeth grinding), genetic factors, or periodontal disease.

The consequences of untreated recession are multiple: tooth sensitivity to heat and cold, root cavities (the root being less protected than enamel), cosmetic discomfort, and ultimately tooth instability. A gum graft stops this process and can partially or fully cover the exposed root.

We evaluate your situation during a complete consultation to determine the technique best suited to your anatomy and the extent of the recession.

Procedures we offer

  1. Connective Tissue Graft (CTG)

Graft harvested from beneath palatal mucosa and placed over the recession site. Natural and stable results.

  2. Free Gingival Graft (FGG)

Harvesting of superficial palate layer. Used when significant increase in keratinized gingiva is required.

  3. Pedicle Graft (Coronally Advanced Flap)

Adjacent gingival tissue repositioned to cover the exposed area.

  4. Treatment with Substitute Materials (AlloDerm®)

Alternative to palatal harvesting that reduces postoperative discomfort.
